The Ballad of Casey Deiss 

Twas a man of youthful features

Twas a boy of sorrowful eyes

Watching out but looking inward

Tall and stately and full of life

그는 젊은 청년의 모습을 하고 있었다

눈동자에 슬픔을 머금은 소년이었다

무언가 응시하고 있었지만 사실은 안을 들여다보고 있었다

키가 크고 풍채가 당당한 원기 왕성한 모습이었다

 

In his life he spoke but rarely

In his mind he cried for light

Painting perceptions, trying to capture
That which he saw in his questioning strife

그는 살아가면서 말을 거의 하지 않았다
다만 마음 속으로 빛을 갈구하며 울었다 
마음의 눈으로 지각하며, 상상의 그림을 얻으려했다
그것에 눈을 고정시키며 질문을 구하고자 투쟁했다

 

Once in Lisbon, twice in London
Travelling around for all of his time
Looking for and finding a goddess
He took Diana to be his wife
리스본에서 한 번, 런던에서 두 번
그의 전 생애를 여행하면서
한 여인을 찾아 헤맸다
결국 그의 아내 다이아나를 만났다

 

Of the children they'd begotten
Two had died without knowing life
And the third I know not whereof
But if she lives, she will yet be kind
아기들이 태어났다
두 명은 죽었다, 삶도 알지 못한 채
세 번째는 지금 어디 있는지도 모른다
그러나 만약 그녀가 살아 있다면, 아직도 여전히 친절할 것이다

 

Casey had a mark of simple value
He had a star between his eyes
In his hands he held an axe blade
The Greek symbol of thunder and fire
케이시에게는 표식이 하나 있었는데
두 눈 사이에 별이 있었다
손안에 도끼 날을 쥐고 있었는데 그것은
그리스의 천둥과 불의 상징이었다

On a night when the heavens were crying
He went out and took his blade
Chopping wood to warm his hearthside
The lightning came and my brother died
어느 날 밤에 하늘이 울부짖는 날씨에
그는 도끼를 들고 나갔다
나무를 잘라서 그의 집을 따뜻하게 하려고 했지만
번개가 치던 날 내 형은 죽었다

Bring him no wine from faraway vineyards
Tell him no tales of the canyon's might
But wish him peace and eternal wisdom
For he has died and he died by light
멀리 있는 포도원에서 만든 와인을 가져다 주지말고
그에게 협곡의 지혜에 대해서도 말하지 마라
다만 그에게 평화와 영원한 지혜가 있기를 빌라
이제 그는 죽었다, 빛 가운데...
