And here I sit, hand on the telephone
Hearing the voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Headed straight for a fall

그래, 이렇게 앉아 전화기를 손에들고
한 2 광년 옛날, 귀에 익었던
그 목소리를 들으니
직선으로 말려들어 가는구나

 

As I remember your eyes were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the Midwest?

난 기억하지, 울새 알보다 더 파란 네 눈동자
나의 운문이 형편없다 했었지
어디서 거는거야?
중서부 어디 전화 박스에서?

 

Ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring Diamonds and Rust

10년 전이었던가 네게 커프스단추 선물하였지
너도 내게 뭔가 주었었는데. . .
우리 다 알지, 추억이 무엇을 가져오는지
금강석과 녹이 아니겠어?

You burst on the scene already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon, the original vagabond
You strayed in to my arms
There you stayed, temporarily lost at sea

나타날때부터 너는 전설이었어
부인할수 없는 현상, 방랑자의 그 기본
홀연히 내 품안으로 들어와
그곳에 머물럿었지, 잠시 바다속에서 방황할때에

 

The Madonna was yours for free
Yes, the girl on the half shell could keep you unharmed 

그 성모는 네게 무료였고
그래, 반 껍질 조개안에 소녀가 너를 보호해 주었지

 

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square

낙엽깔린 그곳,

하얀 눈에 헝클린 머리카락으로 서있는

네 모습이 선하고
Washington Square 낡은 여관,

창문 밖을 내다보며 웃음짓던 때

 

Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

우리의 입김이 하얀 구름처럼

서로 얽혀 날으고. . .

이건 나만의 생각이지만
우리 둘이 그때 그자리에서 죽었어야 해

Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words

And at keeping things vague

그런 nostalgia는 네겐 없다고?
그럼 다른 말로 해봐
넌 정말 말은 멋있게 했었어
특히 뭔가 애매하게 하는데에는

 

Because I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid

내가 지금 그 애매한것이 좀 필요하기에
아냐, 이제 모든것이 뚜렷하게 돌아왔어
그래, 난 정말로 너를 사랑했었어
그리고 이제 네가 다이아몬드와 Rust을 내게 베푼다해도
난 그 값을 벌써 치뤘어
